St. Margaret’s is a Community Nursery School financed by the London Borough of Barnet.
The nursery is housed in spacious Victorian building and has a large outdoor area.
Opened on 13th June 1870, to provide elementary education for the children of the district, it became a nursery school in 1978 and was designated as St. Margaret’s Nursery School and Children’s Centre in 2008.

We offer outstanding nursery education and integrated child care.
Children are entitled to 15 hours a week free education the term after they become three years old.
We are able to offer flexible patterns of attendance to suit family needs.
We offer the fifteen hours flexibly but most children attend either the morning sessions 8.30am - 11.30am or afternoon sessions 12.30 - 3.30pm.
We also offer extended day sessions with a range of times available from 8.00 am until 6.00 pm. You can apply for as many or as few extended sessions as you require, but you will only be allocated the places if they are available. There is a charge for extended sessions.
We provide care of the highest quality. Breakfast and tea-time sessions are based in the Sitting Room , which is an attractive, secure and comfortable environment designed to make the children feel at home.
Our Extended day staff understand that children’s needs are different at different times of the day and they provide a variety of activities and experiences that compliment and extend the normal Nursery Curriculum.
We have Fully qualified teaching staff – the Headteacher and four Class Teachers, one of whom is the Deputy Head.
Seven Nursery Nurses with NNEB or B Tec training, one of whom works in the Extended Day Service.
Two Teaching Assistants who work with Extended Day, and three Teaching Assistants who work with Children with Special Educational Needs and English as an Additional Language.
A School Secretary and a Site Supervisor and six Mealtime Supervisors.
In each class you will find a teacher and a nursery nurse, working as a team within their room and within the Nursery as a whole.
On most days classroom staff are joined by one or more Teaching Assistants and by Students who are based at local colleges, and are training to be early years’ practitioners or teachers.We also have a Children’s Centre Co-ordinator, a Senior Outreach Worker, a Family Support Worker and an Information and Administrative Officer, who are responsible for running the Children’s Centre services.
There are twelve members of the Governing Body, amongst other things, they are responsible for monitoring and challenging the quality of the provision. The Governing Body of St. Margaret’s Nursery School and Children’s Centre is made up of 5 types of Governor: -
Local Authority representatives are directly appointed by the Local Authority. They may be members of political parties or people recognised for their community involvement. Their term of office is four years.
Community governors are appointed from members of the local Community. Their term of office is also four years.
Parent governors are elected by other parents who have children at the School. They can present the views of parents to the Governing Body, but, above all, they speak as individuals.
Staff governors are elected by the Staff of St. Margaret’s.
Headteacher governor, as Headteacher Jane Chew is a governor for as long as she remains in post.

The term after your child turns 3 years old you will be entitled to 15 hours free nursery education.
Offers are made from March onwards in the academic year that your child would be eligible to start nursery school.
